Edmonds strikes at Coast

Feb 19, 2012
FORMER Patinack Farm galloper Vaarwel had the bookies on the back foot when he resumed in brilliant fashion for new trainer Toby Edmonds at the Gold Coast this afternoon. Heavily backed from $5 to run the $2.50 favourite, Vaarwel won as he liked in fast time in the Motor Neurone Disease Qld Class 1 Hcp (900m). Edmonds always liked the son of Flying Spur when he worked for Patinack Farm’s Queensland operation a few seasons back. Originally a $115,000 purchase at the 2008 Magic Millions sale, Edmonds purchased Vaarwel for $14,500 when Patinack put him through the National Racehorse Sale on the Gold Coast in January. “Toby always liked this horse when he was with Patinack and that’s why we were keen to buy him when he went through the sale in January,’’ said part-owner Dale Streten. “He trialled well here the other week and we were pretty confident. He’s bolted in and run just a tick outside the class record.’’ Vaarwel clocked a sizzling 50.50seconds today which wasn’t far off the 20-year-old class record of 49.96 held by Merlady. Tornado Alley holds the course record of 49.66secs. Ridden today by Matt Paget, Vaarwel cruised away in the straight to score by 4-1/4 lengths from Twenty Two Red ($15) with Sunsets On Fire a neck away third.   Story courtesy of Neil Archer   More

Weekend Runners Review

Feb 19, 2012
Hi All This weekend saw us with four runners, last start Sunshine Coast victor, Chipp'n Away, Politely, and two new acquisitions to our team, Vaarwel and Purettan. First of our weekend runners was the family owned Chipp'n Away in Race 5 at Doomben, ridden by Chris Munce, he began brilliantly from barrier 11, with a great piece of riding from Chris, was one off the fence within the first 200m. Upon straightening it looked as though he would greet the judge first, if not for the favourite, who was a shade better on the day. Chris also commented that he may be looking for the extra furlong now. Providing he pulls up well, Chipp'n Away will go around next Saturday in a 1200m No Metro Win race, all things being equal he should be ultra competitive again. Race 7 at Doomben, and we had Politely run . His form this time in has been ultra consistent without a victory, and has been up a long while now. Yesterday he raced a little tired, he was beaten just a touch under 4.5 lengths into 6th and will head off for a well deserved spell. I must give the owners a mention for this horse, and they are; Pam Beer, Pat Clingly, Kate Clingly, Sandy Ingwersen, Pat James, Vicki Philp, Tricia Rollason, Belinda Skepper, Glenys Thompson. All of the ladies head to the races for a day on the wines whenever "Bob" as Politely is known around the yard, runs, Its fantastic to see the women enjoying their racing so much, We are very greatful for your support!   Race 8 at Doomben and we had the newest addition to our yard race, the Ghostly Grey, Purettan. Ridden by Paul Hammersley, he was 3 and 4 wide the entire trip, from barrier 9. He hit the front half way up the straight, only to be run down in the shadows of the post, and giving the winner 3 and a half Kilograms. We were extremely proud of his effort, next time out hopefully he draws a gate and he will be very hard to beat. Thanks to the owners for the opportunity to train Purettan, I'm sure we will build on his already impressive record in quick time.   Last but not least, we had the one runner at Gold Coast, Vaarwel. Another new addition to our stable, bought from the Magic Millions Tried Horse Sale, for $15,000. In Race 5 at the Coast, he was well supported in the market, and justified the odds, with a commanding victory, he jumped well in the 900m scamper and aided by a superb Matthew Paget ride, ran away to win by 4 and a half lengths in slick time, we went to the races very confident after a nice trial, so to see him win first up for us was a big bonus as he has plenty of improvement and is only lightly raced, onwards and upwards, and Im sure the owners are going to have a cracker of a time racing him!     Regards Toby More
